Step 1
Fibroid Removal Surgery also known as Myomectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of uterine fibroids. These are non cancerous growths that develop in the muscle layer of the uterus often causing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure. Myomectomy can provide relief from these symptoms while preserving the uterus for future pregnancies. The surgery can be performed through different methods including laparoscopic (minimally invasive), abdominal or robotic surgery.
Fibroid removal surgery is often recommended when fibroids cause significant symptoms that affect the quality of life. Symptoms can include:
Heavy periods or prolonged menstrual bleeding
Pelvic pain or pressure
Difficulty in becoming pregnant
Urinary issues due to pressure on the bladder
Constipation due to pressure on the bowel
Myomectomy is also an option for women who wish to preserve their fertility as it allows them to keep their uterus intact.
Before undergoing a myomectomy, there are several steps you should take to ensure a smooth procedure:
Myomectomy can be performed in different ways depending on the size, number and location of the fibroids:
1. Before the process:
You will undergo a pre operative assessment which may include imaging tests and blood work.
The doctor will explain the surgery and answer any questions you may have.
2. During the process:
The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep.
The type of myomectomy you receive will depend on the size and location of the fibroids.
3. After the process:
After the procedure you may need a few days in the hospital for recovery.
Most women experience some discomfort but pain medications will help manage this.
The recovery time varies but many patients return to normal activities within a few weeks.
Like any surgery, myomectomy carries some risks, Like:
Infection
Heavy bleeding
Damage to surrounding organs like the bladder or bowel
Scar tissue formation (adhesions)
Risks associated with anesthesia
It is important to discuss any concerns with your doctor before undergoing the procedure.
