Macroglobulinémie de Waldenström

Overview 

Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in which abnormal white blood cells (lymphoplasmacytic cells) produce excess amounts of a protein called immunoglobulin M (IgM). This leads to thickened blood (hyperviscosity) and various systemic symptoms.

The disease progresses slowly and mainly affects older adults. Early diagnosis and appropriate management help control symptoms and improve quality of life.

• Symptomatic Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia: Presents with clinical symptoms
• Asymptomatic (Smoldering) Waldenström’s: No symptoms, detected during testing

Symptoms of Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia

• Fatigue and weakness
• Unexplained weight loss
• Night sweats
• Enlarged lymph nodes
• Bleeding (nosebleeds, gum bleeding)
• Blurred vision (due to thick blood)
• Numbness or tingling in hands and feet

• Genetic mutations (e.g., MYD88 mutation)
• Abnormal growth of lymphoplasmacytic cells
