FAQ

Overview

Tibial Fracture is a break or crack in the tibia (shinbone), the larger and stronger of the two bones in the lower leg. It is one of the most commonly fractured long bones in the body and usually occurs due to trauma or high-impact injuries.

Tibial fractures can range from minor cracks to severe breaks involving multiple fragments. Depending on the severity, treatment may involve immobilization or surgical intervention. Early diagnosis and proper management are essential for restoring normal function and mobility.

Types of Tibial Fracture Disease

  • Stable Fracture: Bone ends remain aligned
  • Displaced Fracture: Bone fragments are out of alignment
  • Open (Compound) Fracture: Bone breaks through the skin
  • Closed Fracture: Bone breaks without skin injury
  • Comminuted Fracture: Bone is broken into multiple pieces
  • Spiral Fracture: Caused by twisting injury
  • Stress Fracture: Small crack due to repetitive stress

Symptoms of Tibial Fracture

  • Severe pain in the lower leg
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Difficulty or inability to bear weight
  • Visible deformity in severe cases
  • Bruising around the injured area
  • Limited movement of the leg

Causes of Tibial Fracture

  • Road traffic accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Falls from height
  • Direct impact or trauma
  • Repetitive stress (in athletes)

Complications of Tibial Fracture

  • Delayed bone healing or non-union
  • Infection (especially in open fractures)
  • Compartment syndrome (increased pressure in leg muscles)
  • Nerve or blood vessel damage
  • Joint stiffness or reduced mobility

Risk Factors of Tibial Fracture

  • High-impact sports or activities
  • Osteoporosis or weak bones
  • Poor nutrition (low calcium/vitamin D)
  • Previous fractures
  • Elderly age

Prevention of Tibial Fracture

  • Wearing protective gear during sports
  • Maintaining strong bones through diet and exercise
  • Avoiding high-risk activities without safety measures
