Overview 

Thyroid Cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. The thyroid plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature through hormone production.

Thyroid cancer is often highly treatable, especially when diagnosed early. In many cases, it grows slowly and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the initial stages. However, some aggressive forms can spread to nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment significantly improve outcomes and long-term survival.

Types of Thyroid Cancer

• Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Most common type, slow-growing
• Follicular Thyroid Cancer: Can spread to lungs or bones
• Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC): Develops from C cells, may be genetic
• Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer: Rare and highly aggressive
• Hurthle Cell Thyroid Cancer: A variant of follicular cancer

Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer

• Lump or swelling in the neck
• Difficulty swallowing
• Persistent hoarseness or voice changes
• Pain in the neck or throat
• Enlarged lymph nodes
• Difficulty breathing in advanced cases

Causes of Thyroid Cancer

• Genetic mutations affecting thyroid cells
• Family history of thyroid or endocrine cancers
• Exposure to radiation (especially during childhood)
• Iodine imbalance in diet
• Certain inherited syndromes

Complications of Thyroid Cancer

• Spread to lymph nodes, lungs, or bones
• Recurrence after treatment
• Hormonal imbalance after thyroid removal
• Voice changes due to nerve involvement
• Calcium imbalance (if parathyroid glands are affected)

Risk Factors of Thyroid Cancer

• Female gender (higher incidence in women)
• Age (commonly between 20–55 years)
• Family history of thyroid disease
• Previous radiation exposure
• Iodine deficiency or excess
