Overview 

Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, commonly found in soil, dust, and animal waste. The bacteria enter the body through cuts or wounds and produce toxins that affect the nervous system.

Tetanus leads to painful muscle stiffness and spasms, especially in the jaw and neck, often referred to as “lockjaw.” It is a life-threatening condition but can be prevented through vaccination and proper wound care.

Types of Tetanus

• Generalized Tetanus: Most common form, affects the entire body
• Localized Tetanus: Muscle stiffness near the wound site
• Cephalic Tetanus: Rare type affecting head and facial nerves
• Neonatal Tetanus: Occurs in newborns due to infection of the umbilical stump

Symptoms of Tetanus

• Muscle stiffness, especially in jaw (lockjaw)
• Difficulty swallowing
• Painful muscle spasms
• Stiffness in neck, abdomen, or limbs
• Fever and sweating
• Rapid heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing in severe cases

Causes of Tetanus

Infection by Clostridium tetani bacteria

Bacteria entering through cuts, wounds, or punctures

Injuries from contaminated objects (nails, blades, etc.)

Burns, surgical wounds, or animal bites

Poor wound hygiene

Complications of Tetanus

• Severe muscle spasms affecting breathing
• Respiratory failure
• Bone fractures due to intense spasms
• Pneumonia
• Heart rhythm disturbances
• Risk of death in untreated cases

Risk Factors of Tetanus

• Lack of vaccination or incomplete immunization
• Deep or contaminated wounds
• Poor hygiene and wound care
• Living in rural or unhygienic conditions
• Newborns with unclean delivery practices

Prevention of Tetanus

• Routine tetanus vaccination (TT or DTP vaccine)
• Booster doses every 10 years
• Immediate cleaning and care of wounds
• Use of sterile equipment in medical procedures
• Proper hygiene during childbirth

Prognosis of Tetanus

• Early treatment improves survival chances
• Severe cases may require intensive care
• Recovery can take weeks to months
• Vaccinated individuals have better outcomes
• Without treatment, tetanus can be life-threatening
