FAQ

Overview

  • Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a serious neurological condition that occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord or the nerves at the end of the spinal canal. This injury can result in partial or complete loss of movement, sensation, and body functions below the level of injury.
  • SCI may lead to conditions such as paraplegia (affecting the lower body) or quadriplegia (tetraplegia) (affecting both upper and lower limbs). The severity depends on the location and extent of the damage.
  • Timely diagnosis, advanced treatment, and structured rehabilitation play a critical role in improving recovery and quality of life.

Types of Spinal Cord Injury

  • Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: Some function or sensation remains below the injury.
  • Complete Spinal Cord Injury: Total loss of motor and sensory function below the injury.
  • Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia): Affects arms, hands, trunk, legs, and pelvic organs—usually from cervical spine trauma.
  • Paraplegia: Impacts all or part of the trunk, legs, and pelvic organs.
  • Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: High-level injuries (C1–C8) affecting both upper and lower body.
  • Thoracic and Lumbar Injuries: Mid-to-lower spine trauma leading to paraplegia.
  • Central Cord Syndrome: Loss of function more in arms than legs.
  • Anterior Cord Syndrome: Affects motor function, pain, and temperature sensations.
  • Brown-Séquard Syndrome: One-sided spinal cord damage causing asymmetric symptoms.

Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injury

  • Sudden loss of movement below the injury
  • Loss of sensation (touch, pain, temperature)
  • Weakness or complete paralysis in limbs
  • Severe back pain or pressure in neck/spine
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Difficulty breathing (in high cervical injuries)
  • Tingling, numbness, or altered sensations
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Spinal shock (temporary loss of all functions below injury)

Causes of Spinal Cord Injury

  • Traumatic accidents (road injuries, falls, gunshot wounds)
  • Sports-related trauma
  • Diving into shallow water
  • Diseases such as cancer, arthritis, or spinal infections
  • Spinal cord compression due to tumors or herniated discs
  • Surgical complications affecting the spine

Complications in Spinal Cord Injury

  • Chronic pain and muscle spasms
  • Respiratory infections and pneumonia
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Depression and mental health issues
  • Autonomic dysreflexia (especially in high SCI)
  • Osteoporosis and bone fractures

Risk Factors of Spinal Cord Injury

  • High-risk physical activities or sports
  • Unsafe driving practices
  • Existing spinal disorders
  • Age group (higher risk in young adults)
  • Weak bone health or chronic conditions
  • Delay in receiving medical care

Preventions of Spinal Cord Injury

  • Use seat belts and helmets consistently
  • Avoid diving into shallow or unknown waters
  • Follow safety measures in sports
  • Maintain bone and muscle health
  • Manage chronic spinal conditions
  • Regular health check-ups for at-risk individuals
