FAQ

Overview

Sinusitis is a condition where the tissue lining the sinuses becomes inflamed or swollen, often due to infections, allergies, or irritants. Normally, sinuses are filled with air, but when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. Sinusitis can be acute, subacute, chronic or recurrent, depending on its duration and frequency. It often causes nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches, and can significantly affect your daily comfort and breathing.

Types of Sinusitis

  • Acute Sinusitis: Lasts up to 4 weeks; usually triggered by a cold or bacterial infection.
  • Subacute Sinusitis: Symptoms persist for 4 to 12 weeks.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: Symptoms last over 12 weeks despite treatment.
  • Recurrent Sinusitis: Multiple episodes of acute sinusitis within a year.
  • Silent Sinus Syndrome: A rare, asymptomatic form that may alter facial structure.
  • Bacterial Sinusitis: Caused by bacterial overgrowth within blocked sinuses.
  • Fungal Sinusitis: More common in immunocompromised individuals.

Complications in Sinusitis

  • Chronic sinusitis causing prolonged discomfort
  • Spread of infection to eyes, bones or brain (rare but serious)
  • Formation of pus (abscess) within the sinus cavities
  • Sinus-induced asthma flare-ups
  • Meningitis in severe cases
  • Vision disturbances from orbital infections

Risk Factors of Sinusitis

  • Having a history of allergic rhinitis or asthma
  • Exposure to pollutants, cigarette smoke, or dusty environments
  • Frequent upper respiratory infections
  • Weakened immune system or diabetes
  • Nasal deformities like deviated septum
  • Use of nasal decongestants beyond recommended period
  • Certain medications that dry out the sinuses

Preventions of Sinusitis

  • Stay hydrated to thin mucus secretions
  • Use a humidifier to moisten indoor air
  • Avoid exposure to smoke, allergens, and pollutants
  • Treat allergies promptly to reduce sinus inflammation
  • Practice good hand hygiene to avoid viral infections
  • Avoid overuse of nasal sprays that can cause rebound congestion
