FAQ

Overview

  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus known as SARS-CoV (SARS-CoV-1). It was first identified in 2002 and spread rapidly across multiple countries, leading to a global health concern.
  • SARS primarily affects the respiratory system and can progress quickly to pneumonia and severe breathing complications. Although the original outbreak was contained, the disease remains medically significant due to its similarity to other coronavirus infections, including COVID-19.
  • Early detection, isolation, and supportive medical care are essential in managing the condition effectively.

Types of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

  • SARS-CoV-1: The original virus responsible for the 2002–2003 outbreak.
  • SARS-CoV-2: A genetically related virus, responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, but distinct in transmission and progression.

Symptoms of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

  • Persistent high fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Dry cough that may worsen over time
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • Headaches and body aches
  • Chills and general fatigue
  • Diarrhea in some patients
  • Rapid progression to pneumonia in severe cases

Causes of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

  • Infection by SARS-CoV (Coronavirus), a zoonotic virus transmitted from animals to humans
  • Initial outbreaks linked to civet cats and bats in live animal markets
  • Human-to-human transmission through respiratory droplets, close contact, or contaminated surfaces

Complications in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

  • Pneumonia, often requiring hospitalisation and respiratory support
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Organ failure, especially of lungs and kidneys
  • Long-term lung damage and fibrosis
  • Risk of death, particularly in older adults and those with chronic diseases

Risk Factors of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

  • Close contact with infected individuals
  • Exposure in healthcare settings
  • Weak immune system
  • Older age (especially above 60 years)
  • Pre-existing respiratory diseases
  • Travel to outbreak-affected regions

Preventions of SARS

  • Regular hand hygiene with soap or sanitizer
  • Use of protective masks in high-risk areas
  • Avoiding contact with infected individuals
  • Cleaning frequently touched surfaces
  • Following public health guidelines during outbreaks
  • Early isolation if symptoms develop
