FAQ

Overview

Salmonella infection is also known as salmonellosis, is a common bacterial illness that affects the intestinal tract. It's typically contracted through contaminated food or water, especially undercooked meat, eggs, or unpasteurized dairy. Once ingested, the bacteria invade the intestines, causing symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most people recover without treatment, severe cases can lead to dehydration or even life-threatening complications, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Types of Salmonella Infection

  • Salmonella Enteritidis: Common cause of foodborne illness from contaminated eggs and poultry.
  • Salmonella Typhimurium: Linked to undercooked meat and dairy products.
  • Salmonella Typhi: Causes typhoid fever, a more severe and systemic illness.
  • Salmonella Paratyphi: Leads to paratyphoid fever, similar to typhoid but less severe.
  • Salmonella Africana: A regional strain occasionally found in Africa, linked to travel-related infections.
