Step 1
TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is a common surgical procedure used to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). The procedure removes excess prostate tissue that is causing urinary problems, using a resectoscope inserted through the urethra. It is one of the most effective treatments for prostate enlargement, helping to restore normal urination.
1. Before the Procedure:
Consultation with your surgeon to discuss the surgery and any last-minute preparations.
Anesthesia: You will be given anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable.
2. During the Procedure:
The surgeon will insert the resectoscope through the urethra.
Resection of Prostate Tissue: Excess prostate tissue is removed, improving the flow of urine.
3. After the Procedure:
Recovery Room: After surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery room as the anesthesia wears off.
Catheter: A catheter may be inserted to help you pass urine while your bladder heals.
Hospital Stay: You may stay in the hospital for one or two days for observation.
