Overview

Yaws is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum pertenue. It mainly affects the skin, bones, and joints and is most common in children living in warm, tropical regions.

Yaws spreads through direct skin contact with infected lesions. Although it is not life-threatening in early stages, untreated cases can lead to severe deformities. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment can completely cure the disease.
