Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis

Overview

Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis is a rare and severe form of chronic kidney infection characterized by destruction of kidney tissue and replacement with inflammatory cells and lipid-laden macrophages.

This condition is often associated with long-standing urinary tract obstruction and infection. It usually affects one kidney and may require surgical treatment if severe.

Types of Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis Disease

Focal XGP: Limited to a small part of the kidney

Diffuse XGP: Involves the entire kidney

Segmental XGP: Affects specific segments of the kidney

Symptoms of Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis

• Persistent flank or abdominal pain
• Fever and chills
• Fatigue and weakness
• Weight loss
• Frequent urinary infections
• Pus in urine (pyuria)
• Blood in urine (hematuria)
