Overview 

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy is a serious neurological condition caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 (thiamine). It affects the brain and can lead to confusion, coordination problems, and eye movement abnormalities.

This condition is most commonly associated with chronic alcohol use but can also occur due to malnutrition, prolonged illness, or conditions affecting nutrient absorption. It is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

Types of Wernicke’s Encephalopathy Disease

  • Acute Wernicke’s Encephalopathy: Sudden onset with severe symptoms
  • Chronic Wernicke’s (Korsakoff Syndrome): Long-term complication affecting memory
  • Non-Alcoholic Wernicke’s Encephalopathy: Occurs due to malnutrition or medical conditions

Symptoms of Wernicke’s Encephalopathy

  • Loss of coordination (ataxia)
