FAQs

Overview

Wandering Spleen is a rare condition in which the spleen is not properly anchored in its normal position due to weak or absent supporting ligaments. As a result, the spleen can move (or “wander”) within the abdomen.

This abnormal mobility can lead to twisting of the spleen’s blood vessels (splenic torsion), which may cause reduced blood flow and serious complications. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to preserve spleen function.

Types of Wandering Spleen Disease

  • Congenital Wandering Spleen: Present from birth due to underdeveloped ligaments
  • Acquired Wandering Spleen: Develops later due to ligament weakness (e.g., pregnancy, trauma)

Symptoms of Wandering Spleen

  • Intermittent abdominal pain
  • Abdominal mass that may move
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sudden severe abdominal pain (in torsion)
  • Bloating or discomfort
  • Digestive issues

Causes of Wandering Spleen

  • Weak or absent splenic ligaments
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Hormonal changes (especially during pregnancy)
  • Abdominal trauma
  • Connective tissue disorders

Complications of Wandering Spleen

  • Splenic torsion (twisting of blood vessels)
  • Loss of blood supply to spleen (ischemia)
  • Splenic infarction
  • Infection risk if spleen is removed
  • Acute abdominal emergency

Risk Factors of Wandering Spleen

  • Female gender (more common in women of reproductive age)
  • Pregnancy
  • Congenital ligament defects
  • Abdominal trauma
  • Connective tissue disorders

Prevention of Wandering Spleen

  • Early detection in high-risk individuals
  • Monitoring during pregnancy
  • Timely medical evaluation for abdominal symptoms
