FAQs

Overview

Urachal Cyst Disease is a rare condition that occurs due to incomplete closure of the urachus, a fetal structure that connects the bladder to the umbilical cord during development. Normally, the urachus closes before birth, but if a part remains open, it can form a fluid-filled cyst.

In many cases, a urachal cyst remains asymptomatic. However, when infected or enlarged, it can cause discomfort and complications, requiring medical evaluation and treatment.

Types of Urachal Cyst

  • Urachal Cyst: Fluid-filled cavity within the urachus
  • Patent Urachus: Complete opening between bladder and umbilicus
  • Urachal Sinus: Opening at the umbilical end
  • Vesicourachal Diverticulum: Opening at the bladder end

Symptoms of Urachal Cyst

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Tenderness around the navel
  • Swelling or lump near the belly button
  • Fever (if infection occurs)
  • Redness or discharge from the umbilicus
  • Pain during urination
  • Urinary tract infections

Causes of Urachal Cyst

  • Incomplete closure of the urachus during fetal development
  • Infection of the cyst
  • Bacterial contamination
  • Congenital abnormalities

Complications of Urachal Cyst

  • Infection or abscess formation
  • Rupture of the cyst
  • Recurrent infections
  • Spread of infection to surrounding tissues
  • Rare risk of urachal cancer

Risk Factors of Urachal Cyst

  • Congenital urachal abnormalities
  • Male gender (slightly more common)
  • Poor hygiene (in case of infection)
  • Untreated cyst

Prevention of Urachal Cyst

  • Early diagnosis and monitoring
  • Maintain proper hygiene
  • Prompt treatment of infections
  • Regular medical check-ups if diagnosed early
