Overview 

Shingles is also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in the nerve tissues and may reactivate years later as shingles. This condition is marked by a painful, blistering skin rash, usually appearing on one side of the body. Though it can affect anyone, shingles is more common in older adults or those with weakened immune systems. Early treatment can reduce the duration and severity of the disease.

Types of Shingles (Herpes Zoster)         

• Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus: Affects the eye and can cause vision problems or even permanent damage.
• Herpes Zoster Oticus (Ramsay Hunt Syndrome): Involves the ear and facial nerves, causing facial paralysis and hearing loss.
• Disseminated Zoster: A more widespread and severe form of shingles, often seen in immunocompromised individuals.
• Zoster Sine Herpete: Occurs without the typical shingles rash but includes nerve pain.
• Typical Thoracic Zoster: The most common form, appearing on the torso or back.

Symptoms of Shingles (Herpes Zoster)         

• Tingling, burning, or numbness in a specific area of the skin.
• A red rash that typically appears a few days after pain begins.
• Fluid-filled blisters that burst and crust over.
• Localised pain that can be severe and long-lasting.
• Itching or sensitivity to touch.
• Fever, headache, or fatigue in some cases.
• Involvement of the eye or face in severe forms.

Causes of Shingles (Herpes Zoster)         

• Reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which stays dormant after chickenpox.
• Aging, which weakens the immune system’s ability to keep the virus suppressed.
• Physical or emotional stress triggering the immune imbalance.
• Immunosuppressive conditions like cancer, HIV, or use of corticosteroids.
• Organ transplantation or chemotherapy affecting immune defenses.

Complications in Shingles (Herpes Zoster)         

• Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN): Long-lasting nerve pain after rash heals.
• Vision loss if the eye is affected (ophthalmic zoster).
• Bacterial skin infections from open blisters.
• Scarring or skin discoloration in the affected area.
• Facial paralysis or hearing problems in otic involvement.
• Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or spinal cord in rare cases.

Risk Factors of Shingles (Herpes Zoster)         

• Age above 50 significantly increases risk.
• History of chickenpox or no prior varicella vaccination.
• Weakened immune system due to illness or medications.
• Physical or psychological stress.
• Autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
