Scoliosis

Overview 

Scoliosis is a medical condition where the spine curves sideways, often in an “S” or “C” shape. While it typically appears during the growth spurt before puberty, scoliosis can also affect adults due to degenerative spine changes. It varies in severity, with some individuals experiencing mild discomfort, while others may face significant physical limitations. Although scoliosis is not directly related to cirrhosis of the liver, both conditions require timely diagnosis and management to avoid serious health complications.

Types of Scoliosis

• Idiopathic Scoliosis: The most common type, with no known cause. Often seen in adolescents.
• Congenital Scoliosis: Caused by abnormal spinal formation before birth.
• Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Associated with conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy.
• Degenerative Scoliosis: Occurs in older adults due to spinal wear and tear.
• Syndromic Scoliosis: Linked to genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome.

Causes of Scoliosis

• Unknown in most idiopathic cases
• Congenital vertebral anomalies
• Neurological or muscular conditions
• Degeneration of spinal joints and discs
• Genetic factors or family history

Complications in Scoliosis

• Chronic back pain, especially in adults
• Respiratory issues from reduced lung capacity
• Reduced mobility and physical endurance
• Low self-esteem or body image concerns
• Spinal arthritis in older adults

Risk Factors of Scoliosis

• Family history of scoliosis or other spine disorders
• Gender (females are more likely to develop severe curves)
• Neuromuscular conditions like muscular dystrophy
• Abnormal spinal development in childhood

Preventions of Scoliosis

• No guaranteed prevention, especially for idiopathic cases
• Regular monitoring of children during growth spurts
• Early physiotherapy in mild scoliosis to manage progression
• Maintaining good posture and spinal health
• Prompt treatment of neuromuscular conditions
