Overview 

Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from your lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It usually affects only one side of the body and is commonly caused by a pinched nerve in the lower back due to a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis. While the pain can be severe, most cases improve with conservative treatments, stretching, and medication. However, in chronic or worsening cases, medical procedures or even surgery might be necessary.

Types of Sciatica         

• Acute Sciatica: Short-term condition lasting a few days to weeks, often due to injury or strain.
• Chronic Sciatica: Persistent pain lasting over 3 months, requiring long-term management.
• Bilateral Sciatica: Affects both legs, rare but may indicate severe spinal issues.
• Alternating Sciatica: Pain alternates between legs; can be linked to sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
• Sciatica due to Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and pressure on the sciatic nerve during pregnancy can trigger pain.

Symptoms of Sciatica         

• Sharp or shooting pain along the sciatic nerve, often radiating from lower back to buttock and leg.
• Numbness or tingling sensation in the legs or feet.
• Burning or stabbing pain in one side of the lower body.
• Muscle weakness in the affected leg.
• Discomfort worsens with prolonged sitting or standing.
• Difficulty moving or controlling the leg or foot.

Causes of Sciatica         

• Herniated disc pressing on the nerve.
• Spinal stenosis narrowing the spinal canal.
• Piriformis syndrome, where the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve.
• Degenerative disc disease weakening the spine’s cushioning.
• Spondylolisthesis, a slipped vertebra compressing the nerve.
• Injury or trauma to the lower back or pelvis.
• Pregnancy-related pressure on the lumbar spine.

Complications in Sciatica         

• Persistent nerve damage if untreated.
• Loss of bowel or bladder control (a medical emergency).
• Chronic pain and limited mobility.
• Muscle atrophy in the affected leg.
• Sleep disturbances due to nighttime pain.
• Reduced quality of life and work performance.

Risk Factors of Sciatica         

• Age: Disc problems become more common with age.
• Obesity: Excess weight increases stress on the spine.
• Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of movement weakens spinal support.
• Diabetes: Can increase risk of nerve damage.
• Poor posture: Prolonged bad posture strains the back.
• Heavy lifting or twisting motions without proper form.
• Pregnancy, due to changes in spine alignment and pressure.

Preventions of Sciatica         

• Maintain a healthy weight to reduce spinal stress.
• Practice good posture while sitting and lifting.
• Engage in regular physical activity and stretching.
• Strengthen core and back muscles through exercises.
• Use ergonomic furniture for prolonged sitting.
• Avoid prolonged sitting or inactivity.
• Quit smoking, which weakens spinal discs.
