Overview
Gallbladder removal also known as cholecystectomy it is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located under the liver that stores bile a fluid that helps in digesting fats. If the gallbladder develops gallstones or other issues it can cause severe pain, infection and digestive problems making gallbladder removal surgery necessary.
There are two main types of cholecystectomy surgery:
1. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Lap Cholecystectomy): A minimally invasive procedure using small incisions.
2. Open Cholecystectomy: A traditional surgical procedure for gallbladder removal with a larger incision.
Why Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy) is Required?
Gallbladder removal is commonly needed when the organ causes pain, inflammation or infection due to:
Gallstones (hardened deposits of bile) causing blockages.
Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder).
Bile duct obstruction leading to severe discomfort.
Gallbladder polyps (abnormal growths that may become cancerous).
Chronic gallbladder disease with repeated attacks of pain and bloating.
Key Advantages of Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy)
How Should You Prepare Yourself Before Taking Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy) Treatment?
Before gallbladder surgery follow these steps:
How Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy) is Performed?
1. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Lap Cholecystectomy)
Small incisions are made in the abdomen.
A tiny camera is inserted to guide the surgery.
The gallbladder is carefully removed.
The incisions are closed with stitches or surgical glue.
2. Open Cholecystectomy
A larger incision is made in the upper right abdomen.
The gallbladder is removed manually.
The area is stitched and a longer recovery time is needed.
3. Robotic Cholecystectomy
A robot assisted approach for greater precision and control.
What You Can Expect?
1. Before Procedure
Pre surgery instructions from your doctor.
Fasting and avoiding certain medications.
2. During Procedure
General anesthesia is administered so you would feel pain.
The surgeon performs either laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy.
3. After Procedure
Gallbladder surgery recovery time depends on the type of procedure.
Lap cholecystectomy recovery time is 1-2 weeks while open surgery may take longer.
Mild pain, swelling and bloating are common side effects.
Resume light activities in a few days.
Risk and Potential Complications
While gallbladder removal surgery is generally safe, some risks include:
Infection at the incision site.
Bleeding or blood clots.
Injury to the bile duct (rare but possible).
Post Cholecystectomy Syndrome (PCS): Some patients experience digestive issues like diarrhea or bloating.
Signs of complications after gallbladder surgery include fever, severe pain, nausea or yellowing of the skin (jaundice).
Results/Outcomes
Most people experience relief from gallbladder pain.
Normal digestion continues without the gallbladder.
Some may need to adjust their diet after cholecystectomy (avoiding fatty foods).
Cholecystectomy recovery time is typically short with patients returning to daily routines within weeks.
