Overview

A craniotomy is a type of brain surgery in which a part of the skull is temporarily removed to access the brain. This procedure is used to treat various conditions such as brain tumors, aneurysms and traumatic brain injuries. Once the surgery is completed the bone flap is replaced. It is different from a craniectomy where the removed portion of the skull is not immediately put back.

Why is Craniotomy Required?

Doctors recommend a craniotomy surgery to treat several brain conditions, including:

  • Brain tumors: To remove abnormal growths in the brain.
  • Brain hemorrhage: To stop bleeding inside the brain.
  • Traumatic brain injuries: To relieve pressure caused by swelling.
  • Aneurysms: To repair weakened blood vessels in the brain.
  • Epilepsy surgery: To remove the part of the brain causing seizures.
  • Brain infections: To drain pus or abscesses from the brain.

Key Advantages of Craniotomy

A craniotomy procedure offers several benefits:

  • Precise access to the brain: Allows surgeons to perform delicate procedures with high accuracy.
  • Life saving intervention: Used in emergency cases like brain trauma or strokes.
  • Treats various conditions: Effective for brain tumors, aneurysms and injuries.
  • Advanced technology: Often performed using pterional craniotomy and other specialised techniques for better outcomes.

How Should You Prepare Yourself Before Taking Craniotomy Treatment?

Before undergoing a brain operation surgery, you should:

  • Have medical tests: MRI, CT scans and blood tests help doctors plan the surgery.
  • Discuss medications: Inform your doctor about any medicines you take.
  • Follow dietary instructions: You may need to fast before surgery.
  • Stop smoking & alcohol: Helps in better healing and reduces complications.
  • Prepare for recovery: Arrange for a caregiver and time off work for recovery.

How is Craniotomy Performed?

The craniotomy procedure involves the following steps:

  • Anesthesia: The patient is given general anesthesia to remain unconscious.
  • Skin incision: A cut is made on the scalp to access the skull.
  • Bone removal: A small portion of the skull is carefully removed.
  • Brain surgery: The surgeon performs the necessary treatment such as tumor removal or aneurysm repair.
  • Bone replacement: The removed skull bone is placed back and secured.
  • Closure: The scalp is stitched or stapled and a bandage is applied.

What You Can Expect?

1. Before the Procedure:

Pre surgery consultations and medical tests.

Shaving of a small portion of hair at the surgical site.

Administration of anesthesia.

2. During the Procedure:

The surgery may take several hours depending on the condition being treated.

The surgical team monitors vital signs throughout.

3. After the Procedure:

You will wake up in the ICU for close monitoring.

Some swelling and headaches are normal.

Recovery in the hospital may take a few days to a week.

Risk and Potential Complications

While craniotomy recovery is generally successful, there are some risks:

  • Bleeding or infection: Possible but rare complications.
  • Swelling of the brain: May require additional treatment.
  • Seizures: Some patients experience post surgery seizures.
  • Weakness or speech difficulties: Temporary or permanent in some cases.
  • Reaction to anesthesia: Can cause nausea or drowsiness.

Results/Outcomes

Many patients recover well and return to normal activities after a few weeks to months.

Life expectancy after craniotomy depends on the underlying condition.

Regular follow ups and therapy help improve long term recovery.
