Overview 

Toxic Shock Syndrome is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by toxins produced by certain bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. These toxins enter the bloodstream and can lead to rapid and severe systemic illness.

TSS can develop suddenly and requires immediate medical attention. Although it is often associated with tampon use, it can also occur due to skin infections, surgical wounds, or other bacterial exposures.

Types of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) Disease

• Staphylococcal TSS: Commonly linked to tampon use or skin infections
• Streptococcal TSS (STSS): More severe, associated with invasive streptococcal infections

Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

• Sudden high fever
• Low blood pressure (shock)
• Skin rash resembling sunburn
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Muscle aches
• Redness of eyes, mouth, or throat
• Confusion or disorientation
• Peeling of skin (in later stages)

Causes of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

• Bacterial toxins entering the bloodstream
• Use of super-absorbent tampons
• Skin wounds, burns, or surgical infections
• Post-surgical complications
• Nasal packing or medical devices

Complications of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

• Organ failure (kidneys, liver, lungs)
• Severe hypotension (shock)
• Respiratory distress
• Tissue damage or necrosis
• Risk of death if untreated

Risk Factors of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

• Use of high-absorbency tampons
• Recent surgery or open wounds
• Skin infections or burns
• Weakened immune system
• Use of medical devices

Prevention of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)

• Use tampons correctly and change them regularly
• Maintain proper wound hygiene
• Avoid prolonged use of medical devices without care
• Practice good personal hygiene
• Seek early treatment for infections
