Overview

Smallpox is a serious and contagious disease caused by the variola virus. It was once one of the deadliest illnesses in human history, known for its high fatality rate and severe scarring. Fortunately, through global vaccination efforts, smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980. However, due to its historic impact and potential use in bioterrorism, it remains an important topic in medicine and public health. Understanding the symptoms, prevention methods, and history of the disease can help recognize its significance and the achievements of immunization programs worldwide.

Types of Smallpox

  • Variola major: The more severe and deadly form, responsible for the majority of deaths.
  • Variola minor: A milder version with a much lower fatality rate.
  • Vaccine-related (modified): Occurs in vaccinated individuals, with less severe symptoms.
  • Flat and hemorrhagic smallpox: Rare but extremely severe types, often fatal.

Symptoms of Smallpox

  • Sudden high fever and chills
  • Severe back and body pain
  • Headache and fatigue
  • Vomiting or nausea in early stages
  • Red spots starting on the face and spreading across the body
  • Transformation of red spots into fluid-filled pustules
  • Scabs forming and eventually falling off, leaving deep scars
  • Rash more concentrated on the face and limbs

Causes of Smallpox

  • Caused by the variola virus, a member of the orthopoxvirus family
  • Spread primarily through direct contact with an infected person
  • Can also spread by respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face interaction
  • Contact with contaminated items like bedding or clothing can also transmit the virus

Complications in Smallpox

  • Permanent, deep scarring especially on the face (smallpox scars)
  • Blindness due to eye involvement
  • Pneumonia and secondary bacterial infections
  • Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)
  • Death in severe forms like hemorrhagic smallpox
  • Pregnancy complications including miscarriage or stillbirth

Risk Factors of Smallpox

  • No vaccination history or immunity
  • Exposure to a person infected with smallpox
  • Handling materials contaminated with the variola virus
  • Laboratory personnel working with pox-related viruses
  • Populations in areas with potential bioterror threats

Preventions of Smallpox

  • Smallpox vaccination – The most effective preventive measure
  • Immunization of high-risk professionals and lab workers
  • Strict infection control protocols in case of outbreak
  • Avoidance of contact with infected individuals or contaminated items
  • Surveillance and containment strategies for rapid response
