Overview

Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric condition in which a person shows abnormal movement and behavior. Waxy flexibility is a key symptom of catatonia, where a person’s limbs remain in whatever position they are placed, as if made of wax.

This condition is commonly associated with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, but it can also occur in mood disorders, neurological illnesses, or medical conditions. It requires prompt medical attention.

Types of Waxy Flexibility (Catatonic Schizophrenia Symptom)

  • Retarded Catatonia: Reduced movement, immobility, and mutism
  • Excited Catatonia: Excessive, purposeless movement
  • Malignant Catatonia: Severe form with fever and autonomic instability

  • Muscle stiffness and contractures
