Overview

Venous Thrombosis Disease refers to the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in the veins, most commonly in the deep veins of the legs, known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). If a clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can cause a Pulmonary Embolism (PE), which is a life-threatening condition.

Venous thrombosis requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious complications and ensure proper blood circulation.

Types of Venous Thrombosis (DVT, Pulmonary Embolism, etc.)

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Clot in deep veins, usually in the legs
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE): Clot travels to the lungs
  • Superficial Vein Thrombosis: Clot in veins near the skin surface
  • Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: Clot in brain veins
  • Upper Extremity DVT: Clot in veins of the arms

Symptoms of Venous Thrombosis (DVT, Pulmonary Embolism, etc.)

  • Swelling in one leg or arm
  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Warmth and redness of the skin
  • Leg cramps (especially in the calf)
  • Shortness of breath (in case of PE)
  • Chest pain
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Sudden dizziness or fainting

Causes of Venous Thrombosis

  • Prolonged immobility (long flights, bed rest)
  • Surgery or injury
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Cancer
  • Hormonal therapy or birth control pills
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Smoking

Complications of Venous Thrombosis (DVT, Pulmonary Embolism, etc.)

  • Pulmonary embolism (life-threatening)
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome (chronic pain and swelling)
  • Recurrence of blood clots
  • Damage to veins
  • Reduced blood flow

Risk Factors of Venous Thrombosis

  • Prolonged sitting or immobility
  • Recent surgery
  • Family history of clotting disorders
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Pregnancy and postpartum period
  • Age above 60

Prevention of Venous Thrombosis (DVT, Pulmonary Embolism, etc.)

  • Stay physically active
  • Avoid prolonged sitting or immobility
  • Use compression stockings
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay hydrated
  • Quit smoking
  • Follow medical advice after surgery
