Overview 

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Known for its deceptive nature, syphilis can mimic other diseases and progress silently if untreated. It spreads primarily through sexual contact but can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, leading to congenital syphilis. With timely diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, syphilis is curable, but delayed treatment can cause severe complications affecting the heart, brain, and other organs.

Types of Syphilis

• Primary Syphilis: Characterized by a painless sore called a chancre at the site of infection.
• Secondary Syphilis: Involves widespread rash, especially on palms and soles, and condyloma lata (moist warty lesions).
• Latent Syphilis: A hidden phase with no visible symptoms but ongoing infection internally.
• Tertiary Syphilis: A late-stage condition affecting organs like the heart, brain, and nerves.
• Congenital Syphilis: Transmitted from mother to baby, can cause birth defects or death.
• Neurosyphilis & Ocular Syphilis: Affects the brain or eyes, occurring at any stage if left untreated.

Symptoms of Syphilis

• Painless chancre lesion in early stages
• Red or brown syphilis rash on palms, soles, or torso
• Flu-like symptoms: fever, sore throat, fatigue
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Hair loss in patches during secondary syphilis
• Vision problems or hearing loss in advanced stages
• In females: vaginal sores, pelvic pain, or abnormal discharge
• In men: penile sores, discomfort during urination
• Neurological signs in late stages: memory loss, coordination problems
• Oral syphilis: sores or white patches in the mouth or tongue

Causes of Syphilis

• Caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum
• Spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex
• Transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy
• Rarely, by contact with open syphilitic sores or blood transfusions

Complications in Syphilis

• Neurosyphilis: Brain and nerve damage
• Cardiovascular syphilis: Aneurysms and heart valve disease
• Blindness or vision impairment (ocular syphilis)
• Dementia-like symptoms in late stages
• Miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth defects from congenital syphilis
• Increased risk of HIV transmission

Risk Factors of Syphilis

• Unprotected sex with multiple partners
• Men who have sex with men (MSM)
• History of other STDs
• HIV-positive individuals
• Sexual contact with someone who has syphilis
• Inadequate access to sexual health services

Preventions of Syphilis

• Use condoms correctly and consistently
• Regular STD screening, especially for high-risk groups
• Avoid sexual contact with individuals showing signs of sores or rash
• Ensure prenatal screening for pregnant women
• Prompt treatment of infected individuals to stop spread
• Sexual health education and partner notification
