Overview of Renal Failure (Kidney Failure)
Renal failure is also known as kidney failure, occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste, regulate fluid balance and maintain essential electrolytes in the body. It can be sudden (acute renal failure) or develop over time (chronic kidney disease leading to chronic renal failure). As the kidneys fail, harmful wastes build up in the blood, affecting multiple body systems. Without timely medical care and lifestyle changes, renal kidney failure can become life-threatening. Understanding the types, symptoms, causes, and treatments is essential for early intervention and better outcomes.
Types of Renal Failure (Kidney Failure)
1. Acute Renal Failure (Acute Kidney Injury): Rapid decline in kidney function, often reversible with prompt treatment.
2. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A gradual loss of kidney function over months or years, often leading to chronic renal failure.
3. Prerenal Failure: Caused by reduced blood flow to the kidneys, common in dehydration or heart failure.
4. Intrinsic Renal Failure: Direct damage to the kidneys from infection, inflammation or toxins.
5. Postrenal Failure: Caused by blockages in the urinary tract, such as kidney stones or tumors.
Stage 3 Renal Kidney Failure: Moderate CKD, where noticeable symptoms may begin.
Stage 5 Renal Kidney Failure (End-Stage): Severe kidney damage requiring dialysis or transplant.
Symptoms of Kidney Failure
Fatigue, weakness, and confusion due to toxin buildup.
Swelling in legs, ankles or face (fluid retention).
Decreased urine output or dark-colored urine.
Shortness of breath and chest pain in advanced cases.
Persistent nausea, vomiting, and metallic taste in the mouth.
Loss of appetite and unintended weight loss.
Itchy skin and muscle cramps.
High blood pressure difficult to control.
Causes of Kidney Failure
Diabetes and high blood pressure are leading causes of chronic kidney disease.
Severe dehydration or blood loss can triggering acute kidney injury.
Use of certain medications like NSAIDs, antibiotics, or contrast dyes.
Autoimmune diseases like lupus and glomerulonephritis.
Infections that directly affect kidney tissue.
Obstruction from kidney stones, tumors or an enlarged prostate.
Toxins from alcohol, drugs or environmental chemicals.
Complications in Renal Failure
Dangerous electrolyte imbalances (e.g., high potassium).
Fluid overload causing heart or lung issues.
Bone weakness due to calcium and phosphate imbalance.
Anemia from reduced erythropoietin production.
Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death in renal patients.
Risk of infections due to weakened immunity.
Cognitive dysfunction and decreased quality of life.
Risk Factors of Renal Failure
Age above 60 years increases vulnerability.
History of diabetes, hypertension or heart disease.
Family history of kidney failure or genetic kidney disorders.
Repeated use of over-the-counter painkillers.
History of urinary tract infections or kidney stones.
Exposure to toxins or heavy metals.
Obesity and poor dietary habits.
Preventions of Renal Failure (Kidney Failure)
Control blood sugar and blood pressure levels regularly.
Stay hydrated but avoid overhydration in at-risk individuals.
Limit salt, processed food, and protein in a kidney failure renal diet.
Avoid nephrotoxic medications unless prescribed.
Maintain a healthy weight and avoid smoking.
Monitor kidney function if you have chronic illnesses.
Early treatment of infections and urinary obstructions.
